Our Trip to Cornwall Park

Room 13 went on a trip to Cornwall Park to go to Auckland's Stardome. It was a beautiful day so we decided to climb One Tree Hill as well. The fun began when we tried to get back down again!
To recount our trip we have written 50 word stories. It was heaps harder than we thought it would be, just writing 50 words to tell a whole story was tricky.

‘What! we have to walk all the way to the top. Thirsty, tired, hot and grumpy. why did I leave my shoes at school? finally we had made it. Time for a rest . Looking out at Auckland, it seemed so small. Rolling, flipping sliding we tumbled into the crater. “Ouch!” - Isiah

Shaking, I stood up. Laughter echoed around the crater. “Be quiet”, I muttered.  Running down a  hill, landing  on my head and doing a flip. Was that a pleasant way to spend the trip? No it wasn’t. I brushed myself off and stomped towards the tree to relax in peace. - Thea

Walking to the top of the mountain, I whispered “Am I almost there?”. So thirsty. Quickly running and feeling the wind as it blew my hair. “FREEDOM!!!”. Relaxed and calm, a cool breeze. Looking out into the clouds, the view was spectacular. Running down the hill I nearly fell over. - Gloria

Net+Learning = Nearning

Room 13's entry into the Manaiakalani Film Festival for 2011.
What started as a Mockumentary, quickly turned into a crazy music video - strange unpredictable things often happen in Room 13! But we make sure to always have a good time - no matter what happens!
LeviRocky and Uili really made this movie with their amazing dance moves and fabulous outfit choices!

Richie McCaw

Many kiwis know exactly who Richie McCaw is and perhaps, even regard him as one of the best All Black captains of all time. Do you know much about him?
Room 13 have undertaken some research and used their imaginations to create some cool movies all about Mr Richard McCaw.

Ezra and Noah Guest Post

Room 13 were very lucky to have Noah and Ezra come and share their stories with us today. Both boys have older siblings in our class and Miss King reckons that these little guys can teach the bigger ones a thing or two!
We all loved their stories so much that we decided to have them guest post on our blog. Make sure to click on their names to see their work from room 4.

When I was gone I was sick in bed! When I got out of
bed I played with Toby.
I think the Colcannon Room 4 made would be remarkable, amazing and magnificent. It is an Irish dish of mashed potato, spring onions, chinese cabbage, salt, pepper and butter.
I was sad because I wanted to have some Colcannon…

By Noah, Room 4.

Yesterday Room 4 went to the staffroom and we created Colcannon. It was irresistible! The best bit was eating the Colcannon!

The ingredients are spring onions, chinese cabbage, potatoes, salt, pepper and butter. The equipment is a pot of boiling water, a stove, a bowl and a masher.

Colcannon is an Irish dish of mashed potato. It smells splendidly spectacular!

The Colcannon was very, very, very tasty and delicious. I loved it! I tasted the cabbage and onions blended into the mashed potato.

Rugby World Cup - Where were you?

Room 13 have been learning how to understand other's point of view. We thought that people experienced the Rugby World Cup Opening Ceremony in such different ways, that it would be a great idea to explore further.
Within our class we found seven different ways that we spent last Friday night. We wrote about each idea in a group, illustrated it and then acted it all for the camera.
On the wall outside outside our classroom you can bring your QR reader and watch all the movies - or simply click the photo below to watch all of them!
Some creative license may have been involved!

The Origins of Rugby

Legend says that William Webb Ellis picked up a football and ran with it during a game at Rugby School in England in 1823. Here's Room 13's recreation of that historic day.

Talk About IT!

Talk About It from Team 4 Pes on Vimeo.
Mr Max Jacobsen wrote this song to help us all remember to look after each other and to make sure that we always know someone is there for us to talk to.
Room 13 loves his song so much we made a few animations in Hyperstudio to go along with it.

Using Speech Marks

We have been working hard on when to use speech marks in our writing. We watched the final scene from Back to the Future 1 and described the scene, making sure to add in speech.

Here's Gloria's very cool story.

Screeching wheels were heard as the Delorean backed out from the drive way. Crammed inside was Marty and his girlfriend Jennifer, plus the mad scientist-Doc. “Hey Doc, we better back up, we don’t have enough road to get to 88” said Marty who was frightened. Jennifer just sat there frozen no clue of what had happened, she was really confused. Adjusting his shiny sliver glasses, Doc argued “Roads, where we’re going we don’t need roads”. Flying off in a big burst of fire, taking them to another adventure.

Taking off in a big ball of fire, Jennifer begged “YOU GUYS ARE CRAZY!!!! I WANT TO GO HOME!”. She felt very unsafe and frightened. Marty listened to Jennifer and tried to comfort her. Doc gave out a big mysterious laugh and said “Don’t worry, I have never failed before”. Landing, Jennifer was relieved that they had survived the return to the future.

Sentence Beginnings

In our classroom we are learning about the features of an effective paragraph. One of the most important features is making sure that your sentences have a variety of beginnings.
We read Toreka's story called "What an Ambush" and then highlighted all the beginnings of her sentences. We have put those beginnings into Wordle.net to give us an idea of the variety that she used.

Games with a Thousands Board

Have you ever wondered how to practice adding 10s and 1s up to 1000? In our class we play a game to try and trick our friends. See if you can figure out how to play?

Building Straw Towers

75 straws and a roll of tape, do you think you could build a tall tower with those materials? This was our challenge for our first morning of Bigger, Better, Faster, Stronger. Our new topic is all about improving things and making them even more awesome.
We started off quite unsure of where things would head, but with communication, thought and creativity we managed to make, well, something at least.

The World's Greatest

We love singing R-Kelly's song - "World's Greatest" at our school. Many many years ago we even had some school actions to match.
Miss King decided that the new crew of Pt Englanders needed to learn the moves too.

Cool Maths Strategy

Today we decided to experiment with I Can Animate and show off a really cool subtraction strategy called Equal Addition. Making movies like this one helps us think a bit more about each strategy and when we might use it. Stay tuned for more just like it.

Movie For Christchurch

Levi came up with the idea of making a movie to show our support for Christchurch after the earthquake. We wanted to show our love and support as well as hopefully inject a wee bit of humour.

Dear Christchurch

I am sorry about the earthquake that hit your city and damaged all of your lovely buildings. I wish I could be there to help find the people or look after people who need a friend.

Carry on and don't lose hope in what you know. Try to feel happy about every move you make, don’t feel too down, feel happy.

We love you, from Lesieli

Christchurch Earthquake

Tuesday 22 February 2011 will forever be etched in the minds of many New Zealanders as the day our hearts broke. A 6.3 magnitude earthquake rattled Christchurch during a busy lunchtime, trapping people in cars and buildings and choking the city with dust and smoke.
Despite the loss of many historical buildings, Christchurch remains hopeful that they can rebuild. What isn't so easy to come to terms with is the loss of life, this time it is significant. As we listen today to the list of the dead and missing, we realise the true human face to tragedy.
What is heartwarming, are the stories of humanity - strangers helping each other, sharing and supporting. Kia Kaha New Zealand.
Our thoughts and wishes are with all the people of Christchurch and their relatives and friends.

Netbook Day

Netbook Day was AWESOME!
Mrs Burt has worked so hard to make this happen for us and we are so thankful for her extra help, that meant we were able to experience this amazing event. Thank you Mrs Burt.
Each of us opened our box and found a beautiful, shiny new netbook nestled inside! We did a space launch type countdown to usher in a simultaneous "power on". The ooohhhss and aaaahhhhss could be heard throughout the school - and we gathered quite an audience!
What a super experience for us all, and we can't wait to get cranking with our OWN netbooks, first thing on Monday morning! Sure fire cure for Mondayitis!

Tomorrow is the day!

So it is nearly here, the day that we have been waiting for now, for over a year! That's right, tomorrow Room 13 will get their netbooks! We will have video and photos to share with you to show off exactly what went on.
First off, Mrs Burt is going to talk to us all about how to take care of our netbook, how to log in and all the special things that we need to know to make sure our netbook is an amazing tool for learning! After we have signed our agreement, that says we promise to look after netbooks and use them for some choice learning, we will get a chance to look around and play with our OWN netbook before it has to be put away for charging.
I'm not even getting a netbook tomorrow, but I sure am excited for what is about to happen to the learning in room 13!
BRING IT ON!

Day 1 in Room 13!

We've started the year with a hiss and a roar in Room 13. (Yep, we need to change our blog name)
Here we are - looking all gorgeous.

We had two main activities for today.
1. Learn about quality blog commenting and
2. Learn our google name!
Here we are reciting our new Google names that are really tricky to remember.

my Reflection 2010

This year we have a cool time and sometime we have to go to play game and my favourite sports is rugby and I have enjoyed going out playing game and my favourite thing about year 5 being cool and bad. When I first came to Pt England school I didn't know how to write much on 28 of July and now I can write some stories on my own now.

My 2010 reflection

What i have enjoyed this year was going on trip to one tree hill because we got to touch lava rock’s from the volcanoes. This year what I enjoyed learning the most was camp because we got to paddle in the canoe at the Pt England reserve. I would of liked to do more of sport’s and writing, maths, reading and fun games outside. I have liked learning how to get better at writing because i use to suck at writing. What I want to work harder at is maths because I forget my time tables.
My best memories from this year are athletics day and capture the flag because they remind me of the time we played midnight. My goal’s for next year are to go up more levels on my writing and maths. The way like working is by talking in a group to get good ideas. The thing that improved on is reading because i moved up a couple of levels.

Mary V 2010 Reflection

Being a year 5 and learning as a year 5 is fun and has made me learn much more about some of the subjects. We have been on lots of trips and adventures but most of all, we have been having our own google apps with our own user name and password . That is my favourite part of all!

While having our own google apps we have been learning about our topic which is little critters. I love learning about little critters because critters are easy to explain for me. The only critter that I have learned more about is Honey bees. I have bees, write about bees, read about bees and sang a song about bees.

I could have worked harder at doing maths work sheets because maths is my hardest subject except for time tables, pluses and subtractions. My only goal is to pass university and become a doctor. Next year I want to be the number one at maths.

Caroline's 2010 refletion

Its amazing being an year 5 because Miss King is an cool and brainy teacher she makes us laugh and she is super kind because she takes us out and play some of he made up games also we have been on lots of trips and adventures but most of we a getting our own netbooks also if you pay it you get to keep it.That is cool aye!

I have enjoyed this year is sports, the thing I have enjoyed the most is art and camp.I mostly walk around with my friends when it was camp, that was the thing I liked and done more of.I liked learning this year is reading and maths,I think i could work harder at writing. My best memories this year is is going to One Tree Hill.My goals next year is going to more trips. Before next year I want to get my rubrick mark higher, the thinng I have improved my maths and sort or reading
